Pangasius, sold as basa or swai, is a fast-growing Asian river catfish and one of the most farmed fish in the world. It tolerates crowding and low oxygen, grows quickly and large in warm water, and produces the mild, boneless white fillets familiar from the supermarket - all reasons it works in a warm backyard system.

Is it right for you?

Pangasius suit a grower with a large, warm system who wants a productive fillet fish. They are hardy but get big, so space and filtration matter.

System & Space

Grow them in a large tank or lined pond of several hundred gallons or more; they reach a good size and need room and strong biological filtration.

Water & Temperature

They are tropical, wanting warm water around 26-30C, and tolerate low oxygen and crowding better than most. Keep the filter cycled under heavy feeding.

Stocking & Feeding

Stock fingerlings and feed a floating pellet; they are eager eaters that grow fast. Grade to keep sizes even.

Health & Care

Hardy in reasonable water; the main risks are poor water quality under heavy feeding and injuries from crowding.

Harvest & Enjoying Them

They grow fast to a large fillet size, giving mild, boneless white flesh good fried, baked or in curries.

Getting Started

Set up a large cycled system, stock fingerlings from a hatchery, and be ready for a big, hungry fish.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating their size and feeding load, and undersizing the tank and filter, are the usual errors.
