๐ŸŽฏ Ways to fish

Fishing techniques

There is no single right way to fish - just the right method for the water, the species and the day. Here is what each one is, what it is best for, and one tip to get you started.

Spin fishing ๐ŸŽฃ

Spin fishing

The most versatile, beginner-friendly method - a spinning reel and a handful of lures or baits cover almost any freshwater situation.

Best for: New anglers, bass, trout, panfish, all-round use.

๐Ÿ’ก Match a light, sensitive rod to small lures and you will feel every bite.

Baitcasting ๐Ÿ›ž

Baitcasting

A baitcaster sits on top of the rod and gives you power and pinpoint accuracy with bigger lures and heavier line.

Best for: Bass anglers throwing bigger lures and fishing heavy cover.

๐Ÿ’ก Thumb the spool as the lure lands to avoid backlashes while you learn.

Fly fishing ๐Ÿชฐ

Fly fishing

You cast the weight of the line itself to deliver a near-weightless fly, landing it softly like real prey on the surface or just under it.

Best for: Trout in rivers and streams, though it reaches far beyond them.

๐Ÿ’ก Learn the basic overhead cast on grass before you ever hit the water.

Topwater ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Topwater

Lures worked across the surface for explosive, visible strikes - one of the most exciting ways there is to catch a fish.

Best for: Low light at dawn and dusk, warm water, bass and pike.

๐Ÿ’ก Wait until you feel the fish before you set - striking at the splash pulls it away.

Jigging โฌ‡๏ธ

Jigging

A weighted jig worked with a lift-and-drop motion along the bottom or through the water column. Simple, and deadly on almost everything.

Best for: Bass, walleye, panfish and many saltwater species.

๐Ÿ’ก Most bites come on the fall, so stay in contact with the lure as it drops.

Float fishing ๐ŸŽˆ

Float fishing

A bobber or float suspends your bait at a set depth and signals the bite the instant it dips. Hard to beat for pure simplicity.

Best for: Beginners, kids, panfish and stocked trout.

๐Ÿ’ก Set the depth so your bait sits just above where the fish are holding.

Bottom fishing โš“

Bottom fishing

A weighted rig that puts still bait on or near the bottom and waits. Relaxed, effective, and one of the best ways to fish from the bank.

Best for: Catfish, carp and saltwater bottom species.

๐Ÿ’ก Keep a little tension so you see the bite, and do not strike too soon on a soft taker.

Trolling ๐Ÿšค

Trolling

Dragging lures or bait behind a slow-moving boat to cover water and locate fish that are scattered or holding deep.

Best for: Big open water - walleye, trout, salmon and pike.

๐Ÿ’ก Vary your speed and depth until you get the first hit, then repeat that exact pass.

Ice fishing ๐ŸงŠ

Ice fishing

Fishing through a hole in the ice in winter, usually with a short rod and small jigs or live bait over wintering fish.

Best for: Frozen northern lakes - panfish, walleye and pike.

๐Ÿ’ก Never go out until you are certain the ice is thick and safe, and check local reports first.

Surf fishing ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Surf fishing

Casting from the beach into the waves for fish feeding in the surf zone, usually with longer rods and heavier rigs.

Best for: Saltwater beaches - redfish, striped bass and pompano.

๐Ÿ’ก Fish the troughs and cuts between sandbars, where fish cruise and feed.

Whatever method you pick, two skills carry across all of them: learning to read the water and learning to cast farther and more accurately. Brand new? Start with fishing for beginners, then browse the full species library to see which techniques suit your target.

Ready to go deep on one discipline? Our free deep tracks cover two of them at a level no single technique card can: the 12-part Carp Fishing Masterclass (watercraft, rig mechanics, bait theory, campaign craft) and the 10-part Saltwater Trolling Track (speeds, depth control, spreads, offshore craft).
