How big should the grow bed be?
In a home aquaponics system the fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water - so tank and grow bed need to be roughly in balance. Enter your fish tank volume and the kind of grow bed you're running, and we'll suggest a grow bed size, a mature fish load and a safe number to start with while the biofilter matures.
Start lightly stocked. Begin at the safe starting biomass and build up as the biofilter matures. More plants than fish is fine - the reverse starves the plants of nutrients.
โ ๏ธ A starting guide, not a lab spec. Real balance depends on how heavily you feed, water temperature, plant type and how mature your biofilter is. A ratio that works for leafy greens may be too light for hungry fruiting plants. Watch your water tests and your plants, not just this number.
