Home/Tools/Aquaponics ratio

How big should the grow bed be?

In a home aquaponics system the fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water - so tank and grow bed need to be roughly in balance. Enter your fish tank volume and the kind of grow bed you're running, and we'll suggest a grow bed size, a mature fish load and a safe number to start with while the biofilter matures.

Suggested grow bed 200 L up to 400 L for more plants

Start lightly stocked. Begin at the safe starting biomass and build up as the biofilter matures. More plants than fish is fine - the reverse starves the plants of nutrients.

Aquaculture guides โ†’

โš ๏ธ A starting guide, not a lab spec. Real balance depends on how heavily you feed, water temperature, plant type and how mature your biofilter is. A ratio that works for leafy greens may be too light for hungry fruiting plants. Watch your water tests and your plants, not just this number.
