Overview
The round whitefish is a slender, bronze-backed member of the whitefish family found in cold northern lakes and rivers, a modest but rewarding light-tackle and ice-fishing target. Often overlooked, it offers steady action and fine eating in clean cold water.
Identification
Round whitefish are cylindrical and bronze to olive above with silver sides, a small mouth, a single dark spot on each scale in a fine pattern, and the forked tail of a whitefish. They are slimmer than lake whitefish.
Range & Habitat
They live in cold, clear lakes and rivers across the northern US, Canada and Alaska, holding over gravel and rocky bottoms in clean water.
Behavior & Diet
Round whitefish feed on the bottom on insect larvae, small invertebrates and fish eggs, staying in cold deeper water and moving shallow to spawn in fall.
Best Seasons
Best fishing is fall around the spawn and winter through the ice, with cool water keeping them active near the bottom.
How to Catch Them
Small jigs, spoons and bait such as worms or larvae fished near the bottom; ice anglers do well with tiny jigs tipped with bait.
Tackle & Rigs
Light spinning or ice gear, 4-6 lb line, small jigs and bait rigs fished on the bottom.
Landing, Handling & Release
Easy to handle; ice keepers promptly. Their small mouths take small hooks.
Table Quality
Round whitefish are good eating - firm, white and mild, and excellent smoked.
Common Mistakes
Fishing too high off the bottom and using hooks too large for their small mouths.
Regulations & Conservation
Managed with northern panfish-style limits. Confirm current state and provincial regulations before keeping fish. We do not give legal advice.
